CAAHCP 2018 Fall Conference

Sunday, September 30, 2018
Westdrift Hotel | Manhattan Beach, CA

Please join Mitchell Green, Robert Sullivan, Carlo Coppo, and David Balfour at the California Academy of Attorneys for Health Care Professionals (CAAHCP) 2018 Fall Conference in Manhattan Beach, CA on September 30, 2018.

Mr. Green will present “The Basics of an MBC Defense: Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” where he will discuss the disciplinary process for physicians brought before the Medical Board of California for violations of the Medical Practice Act, from accusation through to closing arguments at a hearing.  To engage his audience, Mr. Green will use characters and plot points from The Wizard of Oz to offer practical tips for attorneys who must offer defense to physicians who find themselves charged with misconduct.

In his presentation, “Show and Tell Time for the MBC: The Use of Demonstrative Evidence in Obtaining Favorable Settlements and Winning Cases," Mr. Sullivan will draw on over 50 years of experience providing legal counsel to healthcare providers to share best practices for negotiation.

Carlo Coppo and David Balfour will present, “The Anatomy of Hospital Dysfunction: Tulare v. Tulare” on September 30, 2018.  Their presentation will focus on Tulare v. Tulare, a lawsuit over improper interference in medical staff self-governance rights which reached settlement after more than two years.  Mr. Balfour and Mr. Coppo will review the background leading up to the filing of the complaint, the tactics utilized during the dispute and the factors leading to the ultimate resolution.  They will explore how dysfunction among a hospital governing board, medical staff leadership, the medical staff office, and a hospital management group can imperil patient care through the adverse impact such dysfunction can have on credentialing and peer review, triggering regulatory agencies such as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the California Department of Public Health to threaten to close the hospital if the dysfunction is not addressed.
