Martin Mattes Quoted on New California Governor's Climate Policy Plans

Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Chair Martin Mattes was recently quoted in the Law360 article, Climate Policy Will Be A Heavy Lift For New California Governor. 

The article discusses how newly sworn-in California Governor Gavin Newsom has "inherited arguably the most aggressive long-term plans to tackle climate change in the US" from former Governor Jerry Brown.  This includes legislation requiring 60 percent of the state's electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030 and envisioning 100 percent zero-carbon electricity by 2045, and [an] executive order that sets even loftier goals of statewide carbon neutrality [by 2045]."  

Carrying through on such ambitious plans could help Governor Newson maintain California's influence on the climate policy in the US and abroad--something Governor Brown was well known for.  Commenting on that possibility, Mr. Mattes said that he'd "be surprised if Newsom didn't try to assume that mantle of progressive energy policy at the state level and the mantle of California as an international leader with respect to climate change."
