Amber Maltbie spearheaded legislation that could amend the California Political Reform Act to allow state and local candidates to use campaign funds for childcare costs incurred while engaged in campaign activities.  In December, she co-authored an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle with her client, California Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Alameda) advancing this legislative proposal.

After Assemblymember Bonta introduced the bill, Amber was quoted in the Sacramento Bee article How can California elect more women? Let campaigns pay for child care costs, lawmakers say.  The article provides an overview of  Assembly Bill 220.  Commenting on the bill, Amber stated that There’s a really important voice by having all women at the table — young women, low-income women — to have the California Legislature look like California.  Amber also spoke at a press conference in Sacramento along with Assemblymembers Rob Bonta, Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Costa Mesa), Buffy Wicks (D-Richmond), and Blanca Rubio (D-West Covina) when the bill was introduced.

Additionally, she was quoted in a press release by Los Angeles Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, who introduced a resolution to support AB 220.  Running for office often takes a toll on a candidate’s personal finances. Allowing candidates to use campaign funds for childcare costs that are incurred while campaigning is a simple but significant step towards supporting more diverse representation in elected office, said Amber.
