Nossaman Elevates Four to Partnership in 2007; Former Associate Returns to LA Office

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 30, 2007) – Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott LLP today announced the election of four attorneys to firm partnership. The 2007 partnership class includes attorneys from three of our California offices: Ron S. Grace in Los Angeles; Carollyn B. Lobell and Paul S. Weiland in Irvine; and Brendan F. Macaulay in San Francisco. In addition, Nossaman welcomes back returning associate, John W. Kim, to the Los Angeles office.

Ron S. Grace represents emerging and established companies as transactional and general corporate counsel with respect to a wide variety of business transactions, and is a member of the firm's Healthcare Practice Group. His work includes mergers and acquisitions, financings, private placements of debt and equity securities, general contract, securities and healthcare law. Ron has a background in general corporate and technology matters, having served as in-house counsel and Vice President of Business Affairs for a start-up Internet company and a software company. Prior to joining Nossaman, Ron was a U.S. District Court Judicial Extern. He received a J.D. from Loyola Law School and a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with honors.

Carollyn B. Lobell is a member of the Land Use and Environmental Practice Group. She has 29 years of experience as an attorney and prior to joining Nossaman, as an environmental consultant, counseling clients through the approval process for residential, infrastructure/public works and commercial projects. Her practice focuses on environmental, land use and natural resource matters, including the California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, local, state and federal resource protection laws and all entitlements, permits and approvals for public works and development projects. Carollyn received a J.D. from Whittier Law School, cum laude.

Brendan F. Macaulay is a member of the Litigation department, focusing on complex business and real estate litigation in state and federal courts. Brendan has tried a number of bench and jury trials, as well as binding arbitrations. He has also briefed and argued cases before the California Court of Appeal and was previously an instructor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Brendan is currently Vice President of the Board of Directors for The Bethany Center, a low income housing development for seniors and disabled persons. Brendan earned a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and a B.A. from Whittier College.

Paul S. Weiland is a member of the firm’s Land Use and Environmental Practice Group. He focuses on compliance counseling, permitting and litigation for clients including public agencies, private developers, large landowners, and trade associations. He counsels clients regarding land use, endangered species, wetlands, water quality, air quality, transportation, hazardous substances, and historic preservation issues. In addition, Paul litigates environmental and natural resources matters both at the trial court and appellate court level on all state and federal regulatory standards applicable to land use. Paul brought to Nossaman a wealth of prior knowledge having worked in the Law and Policy Section, Environmental and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice where he served as lead counsel for the United States in a number of high profile trial and appellate cases. He holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School, a Ph.D. from Indiana University, and a B.A. from the University of Southern California, magna cum laude.

John W. Kim focuses his practice on bankruptcy and general litigation in the firm’s Los Angeles office where he is member of the Litigation department. He has experience representing utility companies, secured and unsecured creditors, financial institutions, creditors’ committees, real estate developers and retail landlords in complex bankruptcy cases and related litigation. John has negotiated and drafted disclosure statements and plans of reorganization as well as handled bankruptcy litigation involving preferences, fraudulent conveyances, lender liability, and enforcement of subordination agreements. He received a J.D. from Loyola Law School, cum laude and a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, with honors.
