From the Managing Partner

These are exciting times for Nossaman and our clients. With new regulations and technologies, evolving client needs, and changing markets, we continue to enhance our service model to bring fresh, innovative approaches to our client engagements. We are pushing ourselves farther than ever before through lateral recruitment and associate development, willingness to use alternative fee arrangements and staffing models, and a keen focus on efficient technological solutions and smart project management. Nossaman’s proactive and strategic approach to operating in the new economy has resulted in exciting opportunities that leverage today’s realities in ways that bring value to clients and help the Firm to grow and thrive.

We continue to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge issues and develop creative legal and business solutions for clients. Recently, the Firm was named to the National Law Journal's "Midsize Hot List" in 2016 for the fourth time overall and the third year in a row. Chambers & Partners recognized the Firm's Eminent Domain, Environment & Land Use, Healthcare, Infrastructure, and Public Policy Practice Groups in its 2017 Chambers USA guide of leading law firms.

Just as exciting, we were named to Law360's 2015 and 2016 list of the 100 Best Law Firms for Minority Attorneys and its list of the 100 Best Law Firms for Female Attorneys, as well as ranked as a Law360 400 firm. And, Vault ranked Nossaman #6 on its Best Midsize Law Firms For Diversity in 2016.

These recent awards highlight the importance we place on core values such as excellence, integrity, client service, diversity, creativity, accountability, and teamwork. Our vision requires each attorney, policy advisor, and staff member to take personal responsibility for the success of the Firm, and to work diligently to achieve its goals and those of our clients.

We believe that our success is measured by our clients’ success. We continue to partner with clients on matters that are redefining practices and industries and having a positive impact on our communities. We take great pride in delivering the highest quality results, such as the following:

  • Our Infrastructure Practice Group recently celebrated a string of significant victories. We helped the Florida Department of Transportation reach financial close on the award-winning $2.3 billion I-4 Ultimate Project – the largest greenfield availability payment (AP) transaction in the U.S.  This success follows on the heels of the award-winning $1.18 billion East End Crossing Project (Lewis and Clark Bridge) in which our team advised the Indiana Finance Authority on the P3 procurement to design, build, finance, operate and maintain a six-lane toll bridge across the Ohio River.  Procurement for that project – the largest Private Activity Bond issue for a U.S. P3 transport deal and the first U.S. bridge AP transaction – was completed in record time. In another big victory, we advised the Texas Department of Transportation on commercial close of the $600 million design-build-maintain Loop 375 Border Highway Project.
  • Nossaman’s Litigation Department recently persuaded a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge to award the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority $93.2 million in its long-running lawsuit against a Parsons-Dillingham Construction joint venture. The suit alleged that Parsons, as the general contractor of the City’s Metro Red Line subway, had excessively billed the MTA for overhead during construction. Daily Journal recognized the award as one of the top 10 verdicts by dollar amount in California in 2014.
  • Our Environment and Land Use Practice Group helped clear the way for one of Hawaii’s largest transportation projects. The team persuaded the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in HonoluluTraffic.Com v. Federal Transit Administration to reject environmental challenges to the City and County of Honolulu’s $5 billion rail transit project – one that will connect West Oahu with downtown Honolulu. The team also convinced the District Court for the District of Hawaii to dissolve a temporary injunction on construction for the downtown Honolulu portion of the Project. In another victory, the team successfully defended construction of a new $1.5 billion light rail transit line that will connect downtown Los Angeles with Santa Monica. The Firm helped the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority ward off state and federal legal challenges under the California Environmental Quality Act and the National Environmental Quality Act.
  • Nossaman’s Corporate Practice Group achieved major success in assisting Albertson’s LLC, owner of Albertson’s grocery stores, with all the California beverage alcohol issues involved in its recent $9.4 billion acquisition of Safeway Inc. We filed a “mass transfer” application with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for over 300 liquor licenses held by Safeway for use by the new owners. The combined company has more than 2,200 stores and over 250,000 employees, making it the second largest supermarket chain in North America.

To our current clients, I sincerely thank you for your continued confidence in our firm and the privilege to address your legal and business needs. To our team members, strategic partners, and referral sources, your dedication and loyalty have made our progress possible. To our prospective new clients and those talented individuals looking for a rewarding place to work, I invite you to explore the possibilities of what Nossaman can do for you. Together, we can make it happen.
