Medical Staff Documentation Best Practices
On July 8, 2021, Rebecca Hoyes and Cindy Rodriguez presented “Medical Staff Documentation Best Practices” during the California Association Medical Staff Services’ (CAMSS) Virtual 50th Annual Education Forum. Drafting and maintaining medical staff documents, such as committee minutes, is a crucial skill in which all medical staff professionals should be proficient. It requires careful attention to detail, particularly since these documents may be subject to scrutiny in a future peer review hearing or litigation.
During this 90-minute program, Rebecca and Cindy discussed what should and should not be included in medical staff documents and how to draft language addressing complex peer review issues. They covered:
- Best practices for drafting and maintaining committee minutes;
- Best practices for drafting other medical staff documents, such as correspondence with medical staff members regarding peer review issues and notes to the credentialing file; and
- Protections under California Evidence Code Section 1157, when they apply, and how to best ensure that medical staff’s documents remain confidential.
