The Intersection of Law and Ethics in Health IT
Paul DeMuro presented “The Intersection of Law and Ethics in Health IT” as a guest speaker during a virtual ethics course for the University of Texas’ Southwestern Medical Center Health Informatics Program on July 27, 2022.
During his presentation, Paul educated students on valuable legal and ethical standards relevant to health informatics. Topics included:
- Defining and providing examples of traditional forms of conflicts of interest (COI);
- Varying types of conflicts in the healthcare industry;
- COI policies and oversights; and
- Legal issues in health IT, such as non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements, hold harmless provisions and learned intermediary clauses.
The UT Clinical Informatics Center leverages the knowledge from research and experience in biomedical informatics, data sciences, social sciences, clinical sciences and other domains for the generation of information-based products or services to improve quality and safety of patients and the health of people in general.
