Austin, TX — We are pleased to announce Paul DeMuro has joined our Healthcare Group in the Austin office, where he will focus on his national consulting and legal practice. He joins as Of Counsel.
Most recently, Paul served as the Chief Legal Officer for Health and Wellness for the Royal Palm Companies in Miami. He was the “legal architect” for the record-breaking joint venture transaction to lease and operate a first-of-its-kind health and well-being center at Miami World Center, merging the best practices of hospitality and healthcare by leveraging the expertise of the developer in visionary properties with a health system’s expertise in lifestyle medicine and a venture party’s expertise in improving well-being by design. Paul is a retired partner at Latham & Watkins LLP, where he was resident in the San Francisco and Los Angeles offices.
Additionally, Paul serves on the Board of Directors of the Medical Group Management Association in Colorado, and the Data Science/Data Analytics Advisor for Protoqual Learning Systems LLP, based in Reno, Nevada. He chairs the American Medical Informatics Conflicts of Interest Committee. Paul is a National Library Post-Doctoral Fellow and former Chair of the American Bar Association Health Law Section and the Joint Committee on Employee Benefits, where he is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He is author or co-author of more than 200 publications and has delivered more than 400 presentations around the world. Paul is admitted to the bars of California, Texas, DC, Washington, Florida, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Maryland and Wyoming.
“Paul’s extensive experience across many fields of healthcare law and data analytics enables him to add immediate value for our clients,” said Tom Curtis, Chair of Nossaman’s Health Law Group. “We are excited that he is joining the Firm, and his addition allows us to further grow our practice.” In June of 2021, Nossaman’s Health Law Group added Melissa Borelli – the former Director, Health Care Consulting and Assistant General Counsel at Mazars USA – to its Sacramento office.
Nossaman’s Health Law Group provides the full spectrum of specialized legal services required by the healthcare sector. The Firm practices in the regulatory, transactional, legislative and litigation arenas and collaborates across legal disciplines to provide comprehensive, timely and efficient counsel to healthcare clients. The Firm’s preeminence in healthcare law began with the landmark efforts of the Firm's senior healthcare lawyers, including former partner and former California State Assemblyman John T. Knox, co-author of the Knox-Keene Health Care Service Plan Act of 1975 and the Moscone-Knox Professional Corporation Act.
Commenting on joining the Firm, Paul said that “I am most pleased to have the opportunity to be going back into the private practice of law and to be welcomed by Nossaman, particularly my long-time friends and colleagues, Raja Sékaran (SF) and Ed Meyer (Sacramento), who I am looking forward to assisting in building off the foundation that they, Tom Curtis (Orange County) and Melissa Borelli (Sacramento) have so successfully put together.”
With a PhD in Biomedical Informatics, an MBA with a concentration in finance, a CPA (Maryland), and a law degree from Washington University, Paul will lead complex M&A, joint venture and business transactions in healthcare, real estate and information technology, handle internal investigations, and also work in the areas of clinical and physician integration, analytics, quality, managed care, ACOs, data privacy and security, patient-generated health data, mHealth, precision/personalized medicine, social media, informatics, corporate governance and healthcare regulatory compliance.
