Billing Manager (Los Angeles)
We are seeking a Billing Manager to lead the Firm’s billing and eBilling operations and who is accountable for timely, accurate and compliant invoicing across the Firm. This role manages a team of billing professionals and is responsible for meeting firm and client billing requirements in a high-volume environment. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with proven management experience, strong judgment and the ability to balance competing priorities and deliver results under pressure. The Billing Manager works closely with billing partners and clients and must be highly effective in both internal and client-facing communications. The position reports to the Director of Financial Operations.
The Billing Manager leads the Firm’s billing and eBilling operations, including team management, workload allocation and day-to-day execution. This role oversees billing systems, drives process improvement and ensures consistent adherence to firm and client requirements across all offices. The Billing Manager supervises Billing Coordinators, enforces billing standards and is accountable for meeting firmwide billing deadlines and overall operational performance. This position requires deep experience with Aderant, BillBlast and eBilling platforms, as well as proven people management experience in a high-volume law firm environment. The role works closely with Finance, attorneys and Firm leadership to support billing performance and drive improvements in billing efficiency and speed to cash.
The salary range for the position of Policy Advisor at Nossaman is $125,000 to $140,000 annually. The successful candidate’s salary for this position is reasonably expected to be set within this range. However, actual compensation will depend on a variety of factors, including, without limitation, the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop a team of billing professionals, including hiring, onboarding, coaching and performance management
- Assign and rebalance workloads to meet firmwide billing deadlines and service expectations
- Oversee the full billing cycle, including prebills, invoice finalization and delivery
- Drive billing timeliness, accuracy and quality across all offices and practice groups
- Serve as the primary escalation point for billing issues, including attorney requests, client inquiries, system issues and eBilling rejections
- Drive resolution of aged work in progress by escalating and coordinating with attorneys and leadership
- Ensure invoice rejections and deductions are resolved quickly and accurately; identify root causes and implement fixes
- Develop and maintain billing policies, procedures and training
- Train attorneys on billing expectations, time entry practices and client guidelines
- Partner with IT on Aderant, BillBlast and eBilling platforms, including testing and system improvements
- Ensure accurate client and matter setup, including billing guidelines, rates and templates
- Enforce compliance with engagement terms, outside counsel guidelines and alternative fee arrangements
- Track and report on billing metrics; drive measurable improvements in billing performance and speed to cash
Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in finance, accounting, business administration or equivalent relevant experience
- 5+ years of billing experience in a law firm environment
- 3+ years of direct people management experience, preferably leading a mid-sized team
- Advanced, hands-on expertise with Aderant and BillBlast is required (not just general familiarity)
- Strong experience with eBilling platforms and managing client billing requirements
- Demonstrated ability to manage high-volume billing operations and consistently meet demanding deadlines
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with partners, clients and other business professionals
- Strong client service orientation, with the ability to handle client inquiries and issues in a professional, solutions-focused manner
- Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively under pressure
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
