Moving Public Microtransit Forward

We’re advising on a new transit service to offer flexible, affordable, ADA compliant on-demand service in Los Angeles County.

Micro Metro Development

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Authority) launched a new microtransit pilot project in December 2020. This three-year pilot is designed to replace short and solo trips and involves dynamically routing vehicles to pick up and drop off customers at virtual stops within the County.

In addition to offering a more flexible mobility option, the app-based service will be operated by Metro employees with specialized safety training, including incident prevention and robust COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.

We assisted the Authority throughout the procurement and contracting process resulting in an initial set of contracts for the planning phase and developed a supplemental contract for the implementation phase. Each phase involved critical intellectual property advice concerning the impact of new technologies. Our services also included advising the Authority regarding responses to Public Records Act requests and a potential protest relating to the project.

Local Impact

“It’s our job to provide Angelenos with affordable and accessible ways to move around our city and region,” said Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chair Eric Garcetti. “Metro Micro will bring the convenience of rideshare technology at a fraction of the cost, which will mean less congestion on our streets, cleaner air and another way to get the most out of our transit systems.”
