Overview
Rachel Hutton McKenzie advises and represents public pension and benefits systems in a wide range of litigation matters. The counseling portion of Rachel’s practice includes advising a public retirement system on fiduciary obligations and related duties to its members for administration of multibillion-dollar public and private pension plans. Rachel’s practice also includes representing a public pension plan in a litigation with a California City over contribution rates of the employer. Additionally, Rachel has experience with intergovernmental dispute litigation in a water rights case.
Prior to joining Nossaman, Rachel maintained a broad general commercial litigation practice at a large international law firm in San Diego. She worked on complex corporate and litigation matters, including employee theft disputes, trade secrets disputes, climate change litigation and whistleblower litigation. Her client work included handling all aspects of discovery as well as drafting case filings and other litigation documents such as investigation response letters, motions, petitions and defensive deposition outlines. Her practice also included an active pro bono component, with experience in internal affairs investigations, immigration matters and federal habeas corpus representation.
Earlier in her career, Rachel worked as a legal assistant at another large international law firm in Washington, DC, where she assisted attorneys with congressional investigations, white-collar investigations, antitrust matters and national security and economic sanctions matters. Her experience included preparing submissions to federal agencies such as the DOJ, FTC and SEC, including HSR premerger notifications.
