Ashley Dunning and Peter Mixon spoke at the California Association of Public Retirement Systems (CALAPRS) Attorneys’ Roundtable on February 7, 2020 in Costa Mesa, CA.

First, Ashley and Peter presented “California Rule and Public Retirement System Governance,” during which they reviewed the topics they had included in a recent article published by the Daily Journal. They explained the Court’s March 2019 decision in Cal Fire Local 2881 v. California Public Employees’ Retirement System and discussed the next case in line for Court review that considers the California Rule: Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Assn. v. Alameda County Employees’ Retirement Assn., et al., California Supreme Court Case No. S2470 (review granted March 28, 2018) (“Alameda”). They also explored some potential ramifications to public retirement systems’ efforts to correct system errors and to improve retirement system administration that may result from the Court’s decision in Alameda.

Next, Ashley presented “San Joaquin County Employees’ Retirement v. Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America, U.S.D.C. (Eastern Dist. of CA) Case No: 2:18-cv-02042-JAM-CKD,” which explored the outcome of coverage litigation against Travelers, the Ninth Circuit appeal, and potential next steps.

Finally, Ashley and Peter both presented “Luke v. Sonoma County, SCERA et al.,” during which they discussed the case, and appellant Luke’s then pending petition for Supreme Court review. That petition was subsequently denied.
