Bill Seeks to Curb Misclassification of Independent Contractors

Nossaman Partner and chair of the firm's Employment Practice Group, Veronica Gray, is quoted in the California Executive article, "Bill Seeks to Curb Misclassification of Independent Contractors." The article discusses the recent suspension of Senate Bill (SB) 1490, which would require businesses to provide more detailed documentation to the Employment Development Department (EDD) on their "independent contractor" hires. The bill is causing confusion for many employers, who may not understand how to properly classify "independent contractors."

When asked about SB 1490, Ms. Gray said, "This bill in and of itself will not give more clarity or benchmarks for employers. It doesn't tell you how to evaluate; it just says you have to be in compliance...that if you do it wrong, [the EDD is] going to penalize you."
