New Orleans, LA
10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CT

Brian Ferrasci-O’Malley discussed “Coordinating NRDAR with Remedial Action – Perspectives from Industry” on April 19, 2023 during the 2023 National Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Workshop hosted by the Office of Restoration and Damage Assessment (ORDA) in New Orleans, LA.

One way to improve how quickly injured natural resources and lost services are restored to their baseline, pre-loss condition is to coordinate natural resource damage assessment and restoration (“NRDAR”) activities with remedial action activities. During this presentation, Brian and his co-panelist considered the benefits of having trustees and the regulated community work together early on in a cleanup process. They discussed both technical and legal considerations for effective coordination that focuses on getting to restoration efficiently, remedying natural resource injury faster and resulting in less continued loss of ecosystem services. They also discussed the positive elements of the recent proposed Type A rulemaking suggested by the Department of the Interior.

The purpose of this Workshop was to provide a forum for networking and sharing of experiences among NRDAR practitioners, and to showcase damage assessment and restoration progress and successes.
