California Association Medical Staff Services 54th Annual Education Forum
Rachael Harrington spoke during the California Association Medical Staff Services (CAMSS) 54th Annual Education Forum that took place May 14-16, 2025, in Universal City, CA.
On May 15, 2025, Rachael presented on “Exploring the Peer Review Toolkit: Best Practices in a Proactive Approach to Peer Review.” Each physician has their own story and unique concerns. During this session, Rachael and her co-presenter explored the various tools that medical staffs can use to identify, address and correct concerns with a physician’s care or conduct and discuss the benefits of a case-by-case approach to peer review. Through use of examples and hypotheticals derived from real events, attendees learned how peer review tools can proactively result in resolution of clinical and conduct concerns thereby resulting in avoidance of a hearing.
Rachael also presented “APP Grievance Process and Looking to the Future” on May 16, 2025. She and her co-presenter discussed the relatively recent changes in laws pertaining to NPs and CNMs with a nod to the PA practice agreements, which signaled a start to APP independence. They explored the legislative push to view APPs as collaborative partners in the provision of health care. Through a review of legislative changes, they also discussed current practices for APP grievance processes and procedures. The session further explored the pending changes to APP participation and membership on medical staffs, which dove into reporting requirements and fair hearing rights under the Business and Professions Code. Rachael also explored the intersection between employment and medical staff rights for APPs employed by the healthcare facility.
